Examine how attitudes towards linguistic standards empower and oppress language users.Explore how views on language standards can affect speakers positively and negatively 5In my Language & Literacy Narrative, I reflected on how being a Dominican student with autism affected how my language was viewed in school. I connected my experience to class readings like Lyiscott’s 3 Ways to Speak English and Young’s Should Writers Use Their Own English?, which showed how society values standardized English over other forms. These readings helped me see my linguistic differences as strengths instead of weaknesses.
Explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations.Read and write different kinds of texts while understanding their purpose and audience.4Throughout the semester, I worked on different genres such as a Language & Literacy Narrative, Synthesis Essay, Visual Translations and a Final Reflection Essay. Each assignment required a different style, tone and audience. This helped me learn how writing changes depending on the situation and purpose.
Develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing.Learn effective ways to read closely, write drafts, revise work and improve writing over time.4Every major assignment required multiple drafts and reflection. I learned how to revise my work by clarifying ideas, organizing paragraphs and improving my explanations.
Recognize and practice key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaged in writing situations.Understand and use ideas like who I am writing for, why I am writing and how to use examples to support my ideas.3In my Synthesis Essay and Final Reflection, I learned to think more carefully about audience and purpose. I worked on supporting my ideas with examples from my life and class readings while adjusting my tone to fit more formal academic writing.
Understand and use print and digital technologies to address a range of audiences.Use digital tools and platforms to communicate effectively with different audiences.4I learned how to navigate digital platforms such as Brightspace, Google, and CUNY Academic Commons. Although technology was challenging at first, I became more independent and confident using these tools to submit assignments and create my portfolio.
Locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias.Find reliable sources and judge whether they are trustworthy and appropriate to use.3For my Synthesis Essay, I worked with multiple academic and literary sources such as Jordan, Saleem, Tan, and Hughes. I learned how to use these texts to support my ideas and understand their perspectives within a larger conversation about language and identity.
Compose texts that integrate a stance with appropriate sources, using strategies such as summary, analysis, synthesis, and argumentation.Write essays that clearly express my own position while effectively using sources to support my argument.4In my Synthesis Essay, I combined my own viewpoint with summaries and analysis of multiple readings. I practiced connecting authors’ ideas to my personal experiences and using evidence to support my claims.
Practice systematic application of citation conventions.Correctly use citation rules to give credit to sources in my writing.3I used citations in my Synthesis Essay and Final Reflection when referencing class readings. While I am still improving, I practiced following citation conventions to properly credit authors.
