LLN First Draft

Today, technology plays a fundamental role in education. However, not all students are born privilege with being a born American citizen. In my case, living with autism has presented an additional challenge. Not only from an educational perspective, but also in managing the technological tools essential for my academic studies.  Over my lifespan, especially during my transition from the Dominican Republic to the United States, I have faced multiple barriers that have influenced my educational development. This essay explores how these difficulties have impacted my experience as a student and how, despite them, I have learned to move forward with determination and faith.

From a young age, I grew up in an environment where access to technology was limited. In the Dominican Republic, my studies were done with paper and pencil, and the use of electronic devices was uncommon among children my age. This reality sharply contrasted with what I encountered upon arriving in New York, where students are familiar with tablets, computers, and smartphones from an early age. This cultural and technological difference made my adaptation process much more complex.

In addition to the technological shock, I had to face the challenges inherent to autism. These include difficulties learning new things quickly, maintaining concentration, and responding appropriately in stressful situations. For example, when trying to access educational platforms like Brightspace, I felt confused and frustrated. Instead of asking for help, I chose to ignore the problem, which had academic consequences. This experience taught me that failing to seek support in time can negatively impact my performance.

Day by day, even the simplest tasks can become challenges. Activities that are basic for others, such as sending an email or participating in an online class, can trigger an internal struggle between my emotions and my desire to overcome. However, these difficulties have not diminished my eagerness to learn or my commitment to my academic and personal goals.

Being a student with autism in an environment where technology is essential has not been easy. I have faced both external and internal barriers, from a lack of familiarity with devices to my own cognitive and emotional limitations. Even so, I have learned that every obstacle is also an opportunity to grow. I recognize the importance of asking for help, being patient with myself, and persevering. My story is not only that of someone struggling with technology or learning but of a person who, with God’s blessing and the will to improve, continues to move forward in pursuit of their dreams.
