Reflection Essay Final Draft
This semester challenged me academically, emotionally and personally in ways I did not expect. Transitioning from high school to a university environment was much harder than I imagined. I started to manage a heavier workload, learn new digital tools and navigate the effects of my mild autism, which influences my concentration, confidence and ability to adapt. Despite these difficulties, the support of my family, my therapist, my classmates, and my professor helped me gradually adjust and grow. In this personal narrative, I reflect on the obstacles I faced and explain how I overcame them, highlighting the meaningful lessons and skills I developed throughout the semester.
Claim 1: I Learned How to Manage Academic Pressure and Adapt to a Demanding Workload
At the beginning of the semester, I struggled to keep up because many assignments from different classes overlapped at once. I often had to study for an exam in one course while writing an essay for another, which left me feeling overwhelmed and discouraged. The emotional stress was intense, especially since I had never faced this level of academic pressure before. My lack of technological skills only added to my stress, and at one point, the mounting challenges brought me to the brink of tears.
In my LLN assignment, I described this challenge by writing, “Being a student with autism in an environment where technology is essential has not been easy. I have faced both external and internal barriers, from a lack of familiarity with devices to my own cognitive and emotional limitations.” Despite these struggles, I also recognized that “every obstacle is also an opportunity to grow,” and that managing these pressures required me to “ask for help, be patient with myself, and persevere.” These reflections show how deeply this semester tested me, but they also reveal how much I learned about handling stress and organizing my responsibilities.
Additionally, there were multiple assignments that taught me how to manage my academic workload. Each of the three essays in this class were structured in a way that broke the work into manageable parts, which it less overwhelming. Before writing each assignment, we had to submit brainstorming exercises that outlined our main ideas and planned the structure of our first draft. This process allowed me to clearly see how the essay would be organized and identify smaller, achievable steps for completing it.
Breaking the assignments into brainstorming, drafting, and revising stages gave me a practical method for managing overlapping tasks and deadlines. These concrete strategies, combined with the personal reflection exercises, reinforced my ability to handle academic pressure while improving the quality of my writing. Through these challenges, I learned to pace myself, manage deadlines, and balance academic tasks more effectively. By the end of the semester, adapting to this workload became one of the most valuable skills I developed, proving that I could handle pressure and continue moving forward.
Claim 2: I Further Developed My Technological Skills by Learning How to Use Unfamiliar Digital Tools
Adapting to the technological demands of college was one of the most difficult adjustments I faced. I quickly discovered that succeeding in my classes required not only academic effort but also the ability to navigate new digital platforms. Many of the platforms and websites required for my classes were completely new to me. I did not know how to navigate the university systems, online writing tools, or course websites, which sometimes made the assignments feel more difficult than the content itself. As I explained in my LLN assignment, “For example, when trying to access educational platforms like Brightspace, I felt confused and frustrated. Instead of asking for help at first, I chose to ignore the problem which had academic consequences.” This experience taught me that failing to seek support in time can negatively impact my performance. These moments show how unfamiliar technology created real obstacles for me, but they also highlight my growth as I learned to push through them. My family played a major role in helping me overcome these barriers by guiding me through the different websites needed for my classes. Over time, I slowly became more independent and confident using these platforms.
Many of my class assignments had to be submitted via Brightspace, Google and on CUNY Academic Commons, requiring me to navigate multiple platforms at once. My professor also provided step-by-step tutorials for tasks such as creating a digital portfolio and after class she would show me how to complete different assignments in detail. My colleagues were also very helpful during peer review days and group activities, offering guidance and support as we worked through the assignments together. These hands-on experiences were crucial in helping me overcome my initial frustration and gain confidence with the technology. Strengthening my technological skills will continue to support me throughout my college journey.
Claim 3: I Strengthened My Confidence and Communication Skills by Writing About Personal and Meaningful Topics
One of the most meaningful aspects of this class was the freedom to choose my own writing topics. This allowed me to express myself more naturally and authentically. In my LLN assignment, I wrote about my autism, not as a weakness, but as an important part of my identity that shapes how I learn. At first, I felt uncomfortable sharing details about my background, challenges and emotions because I worried that others might judge me or misunderstand my intentions. However, assignments that encouraged personal reflection allowed me to connect my feelings with academic concepts, making my writing stronger and more authentic. For example, when I wrote about my immigration journey and my difficulties adjusting to a new environment, I realized that my story had value and that my voice mattered.
As I reflected in my Synthesis essay, “My own journey shows how powerful it is when people have the room to learn, adapt and be themselves without worrying about judgment.” Moreover, class discussions on narrative techniques, peer feedback sessions and readings on personal storytelling taught me how to structure my reflections and provide context so my audience could understand my experiences. These resources made my writing more coherent and persuasive, while also boosting my confidence in expressing personal ideas such as my immigration story. This demonstrates how reflecting on personal experiences can lead to authentic self-expression and confidence. Writing about topics that mattered to me helped me develop my writing voice, express personal experiences confidently and improve my communication skills both in and outside of class.
Claim 4: I Unlearned the Belief That Strict Academic Environments Are the Only Way to Learn and Discovered the Value of Compassionate Teaching
Before entering college, I assumed my professors would be strict, demanding and unforgiving. However, my experience in this class changed that belief completely. I am especially grateful to Mrs. Brian, whose kindness and compassion truly made a difference. Her patience allowed me to catch up on assignments when I fell behind due to technological challenges and personal stress. One key moment that reflects this shift came from my own LLN assignment, where I wrote, “I recognize the importance of asking for help, being patient with myself and persevering.” This realization was only possible because I felt supported rather than judged. If our professor had been “strict” or lacked the empathy she showed, I don’t believe I would have made it this far. This experience helped me unlearn the idea that success only comes from strict or harsh environments. Instead, I learned that understanding, encouragement and supportive teaching can inspire students to succeed and feel confident in their abilities.
Throughout the semester, the guidance and support of my family, therapist and professor were invaluable in helping me navigate both academic and social challenges. Their encouragement allowed me to stay on track with my coursework and adjust to new experiences. This support taught me not to isolate myself when facing difficulties, but to communicate my needs and seek help when necessary. The semester was full of challenges, yet it also provided opportunities for growth. I learned to manage academic pressure, adapt to new technology, express myself through writing and appreciate compassionate teaching. Most importantly, I developed resilience and recognized the importance of a strong support system. I overcame obstacles that once felt impossible. This class strengthened my confidence and deepened my understanding of the value of patience, kindness, and self-expression in my academic journey.
